Smith International Inc a premium Rock Bit manufacturer was established in 1902 supplying product to the Oilfield industry across the USA. This business was expanded to encompass the mining industry some years later.

Smith Mining Australia, established in the late 60’s has offices in Perth, Mackay and Newcastle. From these locations, SII employees provide technical support, field engineering and product development. We at Smith International are dedicated to a philosophy of continuous improvement and our operation is backed up by an in-house design and engineering department based in Ponca City, Oklahoma.

Smith realised with the advent of HDD that a specific product, designed exclusively for the HDD market was required and set about designing what has evolved as their HDS and HDX series HDD pilot bits. Some three years in development the design proved so successful that the same product has been segmented and used in back reamer applications to provide long life cycle times, when drilling or reaming hard abrasive geology.

Our HDS and HDX series bits have surpassed the performance of premium petroleum bits used by HDD contractors, providing remarkable cost savings and producing a very high level of confidence in product reliability and performance never before experienced.
