5th National ASTT Conference

The fifth annual Conference of the Australasian Society for Trenchless Technology was held at Darling Harbour, Sydney in the middle of August, with an excellent attendance, many delegates coming from overseas, and an excellent trade display with 37 exhibitors.

Following the official welcome by Menno Henneveld, Chairman of the A.S.T.T., Robert McKim, from the United States presented the keynote address which covered two decades of trenchless technology in the U.S., and the lessons learned. His comments led into the technical sessions of the Conference, which covered a wide range of topics, ranging from management to asset management and replacements, to reporting codes. Also included in the Conference were case studies of various projects, and the analysis of their success and problems faced. Some of the papers presented included:

It was interesting to note that most papers addressed the practical problems and solutions that the presenters found, and in most cases had one or two case studies included. 

The Association had a display stand at this Conference, as many delegates were members of the Association, and considerable discussions took place regarding inductions, safety manuals, training and the like. Many delegates purchased the induction video "Welcome to the H.D.D. Profession" as it met their needs in line with training requirements.

The interchange of ideas between delegates was exceptional, as was the display of the latest technology and equipment, and from the Association's viewpoint, it was a very successful Conference.
