The Society is a non-profit organisation and either  Corporate or Individual membership is open to all who are concerned with or are involved in the provision of gas, power, water, sewerage, drainage, telecommunications and electrical services. Typically this involves consultants, contractors, material and equipment manufacturers, public authorities at all levels of government and those engaged in research and development for underground systems.

The Society has been formed to promote Trenchless Technology. Trenchless Technology is the technique for conduit installation, replacement or renovation which minimises excavation from the surface.

The principal objectives of the Society are to:

  • Provide a forum in Australia and New Zealand for the interchange of knowledge and skills in the field of trenchless technology;

  • Arrange or sponsor meetings, conferences and symposia on subjects consistent with the objectives of the Society;

  • Encourage the interchange of specialist knowledge and practices in trenchless technology within Australia, New Zealand and overseas;

  • Liaise and establish affiliations with related organisations, both within Australia, New Zealand and overseas and

  • Encourage education, training and research.

The Society is affiliated with the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT). The use of trenchless technology benefits are many. The need to install, replace or renovate an underground utility service at the least cost; to minimise damage to the highways and disruption to traffic; to minimise any adverse impact on the environment and the need to maximise the safety aspects for both the workmen and the public are some of the many potential benefits from the Technology.

Trenchless technology systems for underground utility services fall into three broad categories:

  • installation of new services

  • on-line replacement, repair or renovation of existing services

  • means of location, determining the condition and mapping of existing services

Trenchless technology is concerned largely with services too small to permit man entry, generally up to about 900mm diameter.

Finally, I would like you to consider your organisation's present construction techniques or the impact of the installation of services by others on your assets, and the need for alternatives to conventional, open-cut trenching. I believe that the Society may be highly relevant to your organisation and can provide you with the most up-to-date information on technical advances and trends in this type of construction.
